Sean Scott, Director of Strategic Accounts, Healthcare Technology, is a straightforward, no-nonsense person who prioritizes the important things when working through a complex problem. His succinct communication style makes him an efficient, yet thoughtful partner. He has a decisive manner and is also incredibly personable—a combination of traits that give him the unique ability to quickly understand the needs of any given initiative, while also successfully building relationships.

Q: What is your professional background?

A: I formerly worked as a lab chemist, but transitioned to sales about ten years ago.

Q: How long have you been with Oxford?

A: Over four and a half years.

Q: What daily habits do you recommend for success?

A: Challenge yourself to learn something new every day, maintain a healthy diet, get plenty of exercise, and get enough sleep. As time goes on, it has become more evident to me that these things need to be a priority in order for me to achieve my highest potential.

Additionally, it is important to see the forest through the trees, so to speak. It is worth paying attention to the details, but you cannot allow yourself to get lost in the minutia. One of the most useful skills I have learned is how to be a taskmaster and ignore the distractions.

Q: What is one of your greatest achievements to date?

A: I’ve always enjoyed seeing colleagues and friends succeed and being a part of that process, whether I am a mentor or a teammate.

Q: What attributes do you think are most important in a leader?

A: I think trustworthiness, honesty, drive, and a passion for what one does is crucial. Additionally, leaders should have a vision for the future and the ability to communicate that vision clearly so everyone is on the same page. Finally, they should certainly care about the people they’re leading.

Q: What’s the best book you’ve read on business or leadership?

A: Hope is not a Strategy: The 6 Keys to Winning the Complex Sale by Rick Page. It’s a little tongue-in-cheek, but it is well written and I often go back to it as a model and resource.

Q: What skills do you think will be most in-demand in 2020?

A: Epic EHR, Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP), Big Data, AI, cloud migration and integration, and cybersecurity — specifically in the realm of telehealth will all be vital and useful skills in the healthcare space moving forward.

Q: What are the top three trends impacting healthcare that you see?

A: First, there is the possibility that regulations could change this year, especially given the upcoming elections. That’s a huge area to pay attention to.

Second, the transition to value-based care. Businesses need to determine how best to take that strategy and make it actionable.

Finally, telehealth and all things tied to the Internet of Things.

Q: As technology continues to advance, how do you see that impacting the recruiting and staffing industry?

A: The advancement of technology is advantageous to those in the staffing and recruiting industries. For companies, it’s always a challenge to keep up with the latest and greatest. Having expert knowledge on hand to provide assistance is a key element to ensuring the success of any new technological initiative.

Q: How do you define customer care?

A: If you ask your clients whether they believe you care about them and their business and they say yes, you’re doing something right.

Q: What advice would you give to individuals interested in consulting?

A: Have a conversation with an experienced consultant and your recruiter, and don’t be afraid to ask difficult questions — gathering information from an expert source is one of the best ways to learn. Make sure you’ve done your research in advance.

Q: What do you do to mentor the individuals on your team?

A: I make an effort to be available for conversations as much as possible. Additionally, I try to discover each individual’s personality and learning style. After understanding that and building a relationship, I am in a better position to offer more helpful and thoughtful advice.

Q: What do you like best about working with your team?

A: I enjoy seeing the people succeed and the project goals achieved.

Q: How do you maintain a healthy work/life balance?

A: My advice is to set some off-hours during nights and weekends for yourself so you can find that balance. If you don’t, it can be difficult to turn the always-on emails off.
