The new year will see a boost in government spending on tech, cybersecurity, and other initiatives, with the approval of the <\/span>FY 2025 Defense Appropriations Act<\/span><\/a>, allotting $852.2 billion in total funding. This is a $27.2 billion, or 3.3% increase over fiscal year 2024, according to the U.S. Senate Committee on Appropriations.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The Department of Defense (DoD) is set to make significant strides in artificial intelligence (AI) integration and implementation in 2025, following the approval of the landmark legislation. The bill outlines expenditures, including $1.9 billion above the budget request to counter foreign governments\u2019 influence through INDO-PACOM operations initiatives and investments in artificial intelligence (AI) and hypersonic technologies. Additionally, it includes $500 million above the budget request to go to Combatant Commands to adopt and implement AI capabilities.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The earmarking of substantial funding to bolster AI-driven technologies within the military recognizes the transformative potential of AI in enhancing national security and defense operations. The DoD aims to adopt and deploy AI capabilities to improve decision-making processes, operational efficiency, and predictive analytics, per the bill.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

AI’s role in the DoD extends to various domains, including autonomous systems, cybersecurity, and advanced weapons development. These efforts reflect a strategic move to maintain technological superiority and ensure preparedness for future challenges.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThis focus on AI across the DoD is really going to help streamline activities and improve the services they provide,\u201d said Dianna Black, Vice President of Business Development at Oxford Global Resources. \u201cThere are some risks, of course, with the use of AI in these classified environments. So, it\u2019s important to establish guardrails to ensure the responsible use of AI, which the government is doing. I think this use of AI will be extremely important as we continue to advance our missions.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

According to the legislation, there is also a need and correlating budget for several modernization and sustainment efforts and a $400 million above the budget request expenditure toward expanded manufacturing efforts for the Manufacturing Technology Program.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Senator and Chair of the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Defense, Jon Tester (D-MT), stated in part: \u201c\u2026my top priority is ensuring our armed forces have the necessary resources to keep our nation safe\u2026 This strong, bipartisan budget will accelerate investments to allow our military to stay ahead of [threats]\u2026\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Senator and Chair of the Senate Appropriations Committee, Patty Murray (D-WA), also weighed in, stating in part: \u201cThis bipartisan bill builds on our efforts in the National Security Supplemental to strengthen our defenses in key regions, deter conflict, promote stability, and ultimately, keep our nation safe\u2026 while supporting our servicemembers and standing with our allies.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
