We spoke to our recruiters about the best ways to create a resume that quickly grabs a hiring manager\u2019s attention and clearly represents your experience, and you as an individual.<\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s start with the basics: What is a resume?<\/p>\n<p>A\u00a0<strong>resume<\/strong>\u00a0is meant to be a snapshot of your experience. It\u2019s a document that lists your skills and qualifications for a potential job. It\u2019s a short document used to summarize a job seeker&#8217;s experience and qualifications for a prospective employer. Think of it as a non-verbal sales pitch to a potential employer. \u00a0Here\u2019s a quick overview of three common resume types:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Chronological Resume<\/li>\n<li>Functional Resume<\/li>\n<li>Combination Resume<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Chronological Resumes\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s really a reverse chronological resume (for those that want to get technical). Just as the name suggests, start with your most recent position and work backward listing both dates and responsibilities. It\u2019s a listing of everything you\u2019ve done up to this point in your career, starting with most recent work. This type of resume is ideal for those with a solid, gap-free work history\u00a0in line\u00a0with the type of job you are applying for. The \u201cWork History\u201d or \u201cProfessional Experience\u201d sections of\u00a0a chronological resume\u00a0are the most pronounced. Our team agrees that this is the most beneficial style and considered the global standard. Focus on all relevant job experience, but it\u2019s not necessary to include roles that don\u2019t match with the work you are doing today.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Functional\u00a0Resumes<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Suppose you are changing careers or graduating from college and your work history relating to the job you want may not be as robust as you might like; you will want to consider writing a functional resume. Functional resumes allow you to highlight skills and then their application relating to the job description,\u00a0as opposed to where and when you were previously employed doing the type of work you are applying. It\u2019s a helpful way to highlight how you could use them in a\u00a0future\u00a0position. It can also help you insert a little bit more of who you are.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Combination\u00a0Resumes\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Just as the name suggests, this resume type is a combination of both chronological and functional.\u00a0Typically,\u00a0this means that both a robust work history and a built-out skills section are listed within the resume. Creating a combination resume is easier with significant work and education experience. You can write out a robust professional summary and skills section, then include a chronological work history. Toward the bottom of the resume, you can include your education and skills training.<\/p>\n<p><strong>A Quick Checklist: <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Regardless of the type of resume you are working with, be sure to use the below as a checklist before submitting:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Use a summary statement, not an objective \u2013 this is a key way to show the value you bring<\/li>\n<li>Focus on accomplishments, not just tasks \u2013 share numbers and percentages where you can<\/li>\n<li>Use standard 1\u201d margins<\/li>\n<li>Keep it simple<\/li>\n<li>Select font styles that are easy to read \u2013 use fonts consistently and only vary size, bold type and capital letters for various sections<\/li>\n<li>Double\u2026no triple check for spelling and grammatical errors<\/li>\n<li>Keep a clear list of skills and certifications along with plenty of white space<\/li>\n<li>Accurately reflect your work and work history<\/li>\n<li>Use relevant keywords that match the job description<\/li>\n<li>Update after each project to keep information fresh and accurate<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Don\u2019t forget to target your resume!<\/strong><br \/>\nExpanding on the above for using keywords &#8211; always target your resume. Use information that highlights the specific skills that match the position whenever possible. This will help you really put your best foot forward and stand out in a crowded market. Work History, Skills, and Education sections should be carefully constructed to emphasize the job requirements using exact keyword matching from the description.
