Of course, trust can mean many different things to many different people. To be an effective listener and communicator, it’s essential to know the difference between simply hearing someone and actively listening to them. Active listening involves engagement and true participation in the process or conversation. It is intentional, consistent, and involves making eye contact, being attentive, showing interest, and asking relevant questions. Finally, listening means following through, which validates the other person’s perspective, feelings, thoughts, needs, and goals—keeping them coming back to you as an operative solution to negative or difficult situations, knowing you can navigate difficult conversations.  

Accessibility 

To show someone you care, you need to be present and open to growth—that’s standard for any relationship, and it doesn’t change in business. However, being accessible is not just about showing up when needed. It’s also about committing to the relationship or partnership between projects or assignments.

In part, connecting relates to transparency—it requires being honest, open, and vulnerable. People need to know you before they can formulate a true connection with you. Beyond your words, connecting consists of body language, tone, behavior, actions, attitude, intellect, appearance, and timing. It gets to the bottom of who you are—what you think, feel, and believe. It reveals your emotions and mindset and lets others know where they stand with you and whether they even want to stand beside you.  

Patience 

Strong relationships don’t happen overnight. Building a business relationship worth having is a bit of an investment, but one that pays well when done right! Additionally, there’s no stamp of completion on establishing a solid relationship. It can take a considerable amount of time to create a trusting relationship that endures, and you will need to work to maintain it even once you’ve made it to that point.
